Video: Jeremy F. Walton on the Contested Times of Hagia Sophia

Video is now available from the first event in our new Things in Theory series, On the Contested Times of Hagia Sophia, with Jeremy F. Walton and 3CT co-director Shannon Lee Dawdy.

Walton leads the Max Planck Research Group, “Empires of Memory: The Cultural Politics of Historicity in Former Habsburg and Ottoman Empires,” at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity (Göttingen). “Empires of Memory” explores and interrogates the material legacies and collective memories that render imperial pasts remarkably present throughout central and southeast Europe and the Middle East. His upcoming European Research Council project, “REVENANT—Revivals of Empire: Nostalgia, Amnesia, Tribulation,” expands this purview to include the afterlives of the Russian Empire, with a focus on the persons, places, and things that embody bygone empires today.
