Recognizing the rise of ultranationalist movements in Europe, Latin America, India, and the United States and taking into account the defeat of calls for liberal democratic government in the Arab world, this conference will explore the new forms of authoritarianism emerging worldwide. With the war in Ukraine underway, questions around the traction of authoritarian politics have become even more pressing than they were when this project got underway a few years ago. Speakers will address present-day circumstances of violence, uncertainty, the ongoing threats of climate change, and pandemic precarities in light of their relationship to global authoritarianism.

Participants include Prathama Banerjee, Leah Feldman, Zeynep Gambetti, Adom Getachew, Andreas Glaeser, Wilhelm Heitmeyer, Péter Krekó, Rochona Majumdar, Jennifer Pitts, Yannis Stavrakakis, Paul Taggart, Françoise Vergès, and Lisa Wedeen.

This is a hybrid event, and it is free and open to the public. Registration is required to participate in person and on Zoom. Please email us if you require any accommodations to enable your full participation.

Presented by 3CT and the University of Chicago Center in Paris.

Please note: All times are Central European (Paris) Time
