The Future of Boredom

Friday, January 29, 2021, 7:00-8:00pm

Zoom

Will boredom become obsolete? In a utopian future of intense pleasure and constant entertainment, will people still get bored? Does boredom have a place in a perfect society?

In this Future Café, we will dig into what exactly boredom is (and isn’t) and what its role as an experience might be in a world radically different from ours, in a deep utopian future beyond our own material reality. We’ll discuss the existential question of what to do when you’ve scrolled all the way through your social media, and even, perhaps, when your society has taken into account a desire for constant stimulation and you still don’t know what to do.

Future Café is a space for University of Chicago undergraduate students to think creatively, cooperatively, and radically about long-term futures. No prior knowledge of the topic of discussion is required, nor is there “homework.”

***Future Café events are open to all undergraduate students at the University of Chicago.*** To participate, register at the link above or join the Future Café mailing list and we’ll email you the Zoom link. Please email us if you require any accommodations to enable your full participation.
