Future Café is a student-organized series that provides the opportunity and space for undergraduates to collectively imagine utopian possibilities and long-term futures. University of Chicago College students, please join us for our next meeting to discuss the future of communication over pizza, guacamole, and chips.

We have developed the capacity to communicate an unprecedented amount of information—and disinformation—across vast distances in short periods of time. New technologies like dating apps, social media, online translators, and Zoom both facilitate and impede communication: they strengthen interpersonal connections and ease day-to-day interactions while also leading to shorter attention spans and creating confusion about what is and isn’t real.

In the long-term future, how will evolutions of digital communication (including AI) further change the ways in which we connect with each other and how we perceive the world? Will the spread of disinformation continue to rise, or will we develop tools and regulations to curb it?

Future Café events are open to all undergraduate students at the University of Chicago. No prior knowledge of the topic of discussion is required, nor is there “homework.”

This event is free and open to all University of Chicago undergraduate students; registration is recommended.
